1998 – 1999

Product range diversification

Commercial League has established itself as the undisputedly strongest and largest pharmaceutical distributor in the market, and proceeds to take a strategic decision for diversification of the product range. Four main business divisions are set up as a result:

(a) Pharmaceuticals – including over-the-counter (OTC), medical and surgical disposables, and materials such as X-ray films, and high-tech diagnostic equipment.

(b) Nutritionals – exclusive distribution license acquired for the range of bio-nutritional (organic) baby foods manufactured by Hipp. In a matter of a few months Hipp overtakes the traditional leader Nestle in a battle with no fewer than ten competitors on this market, gaining a 22% market share.

(c) Cosmetic products and hygiene supplies – Commercial League’s own Swiss-made cosmetic private line is launched on the Bulgarian market under the brand name Turgor®

(d) Dental materials and equipment.

Further expansion of distribution network throughout Bulgaria

The national distribution network is expanded further in order to ensure maximum quality of service and full territorial coverage. New warehouses are opened in the cities of Ruse, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Kardzhali, Stara Zagora and Blagoevgrad – all compliant with the Guidelines for Good Distribution Practice (GDP) of medicines for human use (94/C 63/03) under Article 10 of the first Council Directive 92/25/EEC of 31 March 1992 on the wholesale distribution of medicines for human use.

This organization of our activities allows for a quick and accurate picking of products, safe transportation and timely delivery to healthcare institutions and pharmacies.

Following the expansion of our activities in line with the principles of quality, safety and efficiency in drug manufacturing and commercialization, 1999 brings the transformation of the company’s legal status from a limited liability company into a joint-stock company led by a Supervisory Board and a Management Board.

“Care for You” Medicine Program developed

This program is the first attempt to exercise control over healthcare expenditure in Bulgaria. It is based on a unique information exchange channel of our design between patients, physicians, pharmacists and the newly introduced National Health Insurance Fund.

The “Care for You” program represents a system of modern mechanisms for improvement of therapeutic results and PBM (pharmacy benefit management) in a Bulgarian setting. With the introduction of “Care for You” Commercial League makes its mark as the biggest and most innovative distributor of pharmaceuticals in Bulgaria, providing expert assistance to the health reform.

Back from an intensive specialization at Merck-Medco in New Jersey, the Commercial League management team outlines three directions to intensify the “Care For You” Medicine Program:

  • Building a database and administration of healthcare costs
  • Control and optimization of drug delivery and dispensing costs
  • Improvement of therapeutic effects by eliminating negative drug-to-drug interactions
